In this digital world, information is everywhere, and at our fingertips any time of the day or night. Even still, with all this information available to me, I'm still on a journey of finding and defining my own personal style. You may be the same.
Let me explain.

It's not that I don't have any style. I mean everyone has style in some form. It's just that I'm yet to find my personal and consistent "Yes this is me" self-expression as it relates to clothing, hair and makeup. I know it might sound self-entitled to feel the need to have my very own personal style when there are bigger issues in the world to worry about, but for me at least, it's an important part of becoming more me and I think that's a worthwhile cause to fight for.
Perfection is paralysis

In many areas of my life I let perfectionism stop me from trying new things, and you might be the same. It might be something as simple as trying a new hair style or mixing up our makeup for the day. We may tell ourselves, "There's not enough time to do it right now", or "I couldn't pull that loud lip off, I should just stick to what I know." For me, I think of all the other important things I should be spending time on, as an excuse.
I'm over it.

Fear and perfectionism need to get out of the way if we're ever going to experiment and let self-expression guide us on the journey to discovering our own taste.
Defining who we are

Who do you see when you look in the mirror? Sometimes I'll admit, I still see an 18-year-old single Aussie girl, but I need to see who I am now and choose to love and accept that. I am now a mother, a wife, a startup founder and an entrepreneur, and I need to own that more. I think this is the start of discovering a style that suits me.

Sometimes we can get lazy in the way we dress (For me, it's the same black outfit every day with a touch of mascara and RMS concealer - Otherwise known as the standard NYC street uniform). But I revert to it because I'm not sure of how to represent who I am in life right now. I excuse my lack of adventure with not having enough time or being too busy to consider the options. Though my excuses may feel like valid reasons, in truth they are laziness, fear and lack of confidence. Nobody would know, but I think for many of us, we feel these things sometimes and they stop us from shining.

If it's important, prioritize it

Personally, I believe that embracing your own style and learning how to rock it is self empowering enough to impact other areas of your life. That means it's important and worthwhile but it can get de-prioritized in the craziness of life. Through the challenges and busy-ness of life, we can let go of self-expression. Our capacity gets exhausted with everything else, and there's nothing left over for self expression. But we need to prioritize self expression if we're ever going to accomplish the task of defining our personal style. Also, in reality, small experiments like adding a little eye shadow or pulling out the curling wand really isn't such a big deal.

Where to start

As with most things, we start small without the burden of changing everything overnight. And we make it fun. I just got my ears pierced for the first time. Yes at 29, it's hilarious I know, but I"m really excited about it. This year, I am going to make a commitment to find my voice and style at a whole new level and I hope you do too. Let's stop letting fear of judgement and fashion failure stop us from stepping out and experimenting. Let's dive into the search to more deeply find our own individual style.
